1 Utama: a night in the cinema in Kuala Lumpur
In the Netherlands, Jeroen and I regularly went to the cinema. A nice evening out with the biggest bunch of salted popcorn there is and Jeroen a cola. Luckily we don’t have to give up this hobby here in Kuala Lumpur. There are a lot of possibilities for an evening at the cinema. Last Saturday we went to the movie Friend Zone in shoppingmall 1 Utama.

Luckily we don’t have to give up this hobby here in Kuala Lumpur. There are a lot of possibilities for an evening at the cinema. 1 Utama Shopping Centre
You can’t think of something crazy here or you can find it in a mall. 1 Utama Shopping Centre is Malaysia’s largest mall and even number four in the world. Here you’ll find a rainforest, a bowling alley, fitness centers, two cinemas, a climbing wall, countless restaurants and of course shops. The center is divided into six zones so you don’t get lost. This has failed us twice.
Gold Class Experience
On the top floor is the Golden Screen Cinema. We got the tip that we should go to this cinema because you have the Gold Class Experience here. The whole cinema is a large lounge with huge chairs where you can lie down and a button that, when you press it, ensures that the popcorn is brought to you. We liked this, but when we arrived at the cinema only two films were shown in the Gold Class and not the one we were going to see.
Friend Zone
I wanted to go to Dumbo, but Jeroen thought this was more of a Sunday afternoon movie. Of course, I don’t agree with that, but I still haven’t seen the film. We decided to watch the film Friend Zone. When you’re in an Asian cinema for the first time, let’s do it right and watch an Asian movie.

Dumbo
No Dumbo, but a bunch of salty popcorn. The hall was full and we were ready for it. In advance, we checked if there were any English subtitles as we still don’t speak Malaysian. It was a Thai movie and we don’t speak that either. Apparently, a lot of people don’t speak Thai, because Friend Zone was subtitled in three different languages.
Sound effects
We liked the movie and the rest of the audience was laughing constantly. They enjoyed the ‘hilarious’ jokes. It then became clear to us that there is a huge gap in our kind of humor. There is a lot of laughter when someone throws another person’s hair in his face. This also includes the necessary sound effects. Or when someone gets an icicle in his arm, yet that happened in this film, and the blood doesn’t spurt out of his arm realistically. We had to laugh that in this romantic comedy there is no kissing between the protagonists. Everything that becomes a bit intimate, is cut out of the film.
Asian film
It was a fun night out, especially to see how many people are coming to an Asian movie and how they react to it. Next time we go for an American romantic comedy in the Gold Class or at least Dumbo.
