From sunny Zurich to snowy Davos
We have been living in Zurich for a little over a month now, a city of which I was sure beforehand that I would never move there. Far too cold, and there are only mountains, right? So what is there to do in Switzerland? I was quite wrong, and actually, I like it very much. And a weekend in the mountains in Davos certainly contributes to that.
Quarantine
Even though we have been in the Covid misery for a year now, it doesn’t mean we have to sit inside and wait for it all to be over. For now, it will be difficult, to travel to the Netherlands, because we will have to go into quarantine for 20 days. Jeroen and I both don’t like that (who does?), so we hope it will improve soon. In Switzerland, everything is open, except for the restaurants. I can’t imagine how it must be in the Netherlands, where you need to have an appointment to go shopping for 15 minutes. Even in Malaysia, it was possible to go shopping and enjoy dinner in restaurants. I am looking forward to the moment where we can again enjoy a drink on the terrace. And I guess I’m not the only one…

Jakobshorn
On Sunday, we took the gondola in Jakobshorn up to 2590 meters altitude (CH35 for a return, equivalent to €31.60). With some nostalgia, I thought about the ‘gondolas’ in Genting Highlands, Penang, and Langkawi. I am not behaving very relaxed in a ski lift, but compared to Malaysia, this looked or felt a bit sturdier. Once we reached the top, we looked out over a white area with a handful of people. I can imagine that for ski lovers, there is no better time than skiing during Covid. A ski piste just by yourself and no clumsy snowboarders in your way. So for us, it was also great to hike. Soon it even started to get a bit hot which resulted in some sunburned faces.
Capuns
During a weekend in another canton, of course, the specialty of that area should not be missing. We ate ‘capuns’, a traditional dish from Graubunden. Normally this is made of dough with pieces of meat, rolled in chard leaves. We had the vegetarian version with cream sauce and salad. What exactly was in these vegetarian capuns, we still don’t know. In any case, it was delicious! Just like the weekend, for which we did not have to sit in the car for eight hours. Within an hour and a half, we were back home, enjoying the beautiful surroundings.

Wooden chalets
So, unfortunately, we are not soon going to the Netherlands, but luckily for us, there is plenty to do in Switzerland. Last weekend we drove with Sasha and Jess to Davos and stayed in a cozy apartment overlooking the mountains. Now it’s been a while since we’ve seen snow in real life. For me seeing snow on a picture is good enough, but not for Jeroen. So you can imagine, he was very happy when it started snowing on Saturday morning, and we could take a walk outside in the afternoon. Davos may not be one of those cozy Swiss villages you often see in movies with wooden chalets, but the view is beautiful.
Davos
Davos is located in canton Graubünden, and with an altitude of 1560 meters, it is the highest city in the Alps. Every year it is a bustling place during the World Economic Forum. This is where the CEOs of the world’s largest companies gather, as well as politicians and journalists. The slogan of the WEF: ‘Committed to improving the state of the world.’ In total, about 2,500 people come together to talk about how to improve the world. So that means that as a tourist you should not be here during this period.
Many residents of the village and restaurants rent out their apartments to the visitors of the congress. As we’ve heard, you can earn some nice pocket money by renting out your flat during the congress. During the winter, Davos is a popular place for many skiers and snowboarders. This weekend we only went out for a sunny walk, which for now I prefer better than going out skiing.
