Help, we are moving abroad

For us, it’s the first time we’ve moved abroad together. September 2018 the ball started to roll and before you know it it’s the end of February 2019 and you get on the plane. In the meantime there is still a lot to be done. Jeroen could go to his colleagues for all his questions and you can also find a lot on the internet. There you even get so much information that we regularly had our hands in the hair. Because where do you have to start?

Malaysian visa

The most important thing that needs to be arranged before you move is your visa. Malaysia has different kinds of visas. Without a visa you can stay in the country for 90 days as a tourist. “Slightly” short if you’re moving. Arranging a visa takes a lot of time. Not necessarily with yourself, but with the immigration service of Kuala Lumpur.

Work permit

When you get a visa, this does not mean that you are allowed to work automatically. No, there are other rules for that. For this you need a work permit. This must be arranged by the employer. This can also take a lot of time, at immigration then. I thought it would be easy to find a side job here, but unfortunately arranging work permits costs not only a lot of time but also a lot of money. So it’s not that easy to find a job and get a work permit.

Make sure you pay attention to the following:

  • Find a party that picks up the belongings on location, arranges all the papers, and transports them to your apartment.

  • Draw up a cohabitation contract

  • Search for a sworn translation agency

  • Legalizing documents at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs

  • Past the Malaysian Embassy in your country

  • Search for an international health insurance

  • Looking for an apartment

  • Getting vaccinations

Besides the bigger things, there are a lot of small things that also need to be taken care of. You can think of:

  • Termination of subscriptions, such as sports clubs, mobile, and public transport
  • Unsubscribe from the municipality
  • Change of address at the bank
  • Unsubscribe road tax
