How to move your stuff to the other side of the world?

Since I was 18, I started saving my dowry. Stamps for free pots and pans from the supermarket, cutlery points at the gas station, double-walled glasses at the home furnishing shop, towel stamps at the pharmacy, and so on.

Moving out

In 2018 Jeroen and I had one good intention; we would move out of our parents’ house together and rent an apartment, somewhere. That didn’t work out, partly because I left for Crete for four months. No hurry, the dowry had been dusting away in boxes for years. A year more could be added as well.

Renting an apartment in KL

In October 2018 we decided to say yes to Jeroen’s new position abroad and thus to move to Kuala Lumpur. And what a surprise, everything is already furnished. So what’s the point of taking all your stuff with you? Goodbye nice dowry hidden in 20 boxes, (we’d saved a lot by now). Now in Kuala Lumpur you have three options when it comes to renting an apartment.

1. Unfurnished

This is usually the case in the Netherlands. You rent an empty apartment and put your own furniture and accessories in it. We didn’t think this was such a good idea, because we’d have to look for all the furniture in Kuala Lumpur.

2. Partially furnished

This means that the large furniture is already in the apartment, such as a bed, sofa, table, and chairs. Ideal for us, because this means that we could still bring our own stuff. This makes you feel more at home in your apartment, even though there is furniture you haven’t chosen yourself.

3. Fully furnished

The whole thing. You rent an apartment with everything you need including accessories such as a vase, painting, and tea towels. Because we already had the whole thing together and actually wanted to use it anyway, we decided to go for the second option.

Worldwide Baggage Services

Nice idea to take everything with you, but then there must be a company that will help you with this. We chose Worldwide Baggage Services, this company is located at Schiphol Airport and specializes in moving abroad. We decided to transport our belongings by sea freight. This takes a bit longer if you compare it to air freight, but it’s five times cheaper.

Plan the shipment

WBS has a clear website where you can immediately see what it will cost to transport your belongings abroad. Then you plan the shipment, this must be done at least two working days in advance. You can also bring your own stuff to WBS, but since you can’t fit 13 boxes in a Fiat 500, we chose to have it picked up. You must make a parcel list where you describe per box what it contains and how much it weighs. When you have done all this you can sit back in your chair, because the rest is taken care of by WBS.

And now let’s hope our stuff arrives soon and I can use my own collected towels and pans.
