Italian food in Stresa, Lake Maggiore

We have been living in Switzerland for five months now and time is flying by. Whereas in Malaysia, we spent the first year busy traveling, more traveling and eating, in Zurich we are mostly busy working. Maybe not as exciting as the first move, but no less fun. We can now look forward more to vacations, like a week in Stresa, Italy.

Mountain roads

In April, we bought our first car together, especially me (I’ll just admit it) had quite a few demands. Hero that I am and that I love driving, I wanted an automatic car that was a bit higher, so you feel you have a better view of the road. In addition, a larger car seemed to me to be handy for all those mountain roads here so that you don’t find out halfway that the car is not going to handle that mountain… I’m not saying that I always assume the worst, I just like to be well-prepared. In the end, we found a car and are happy with it!

Stresa

To be honest, Italian food tastes many times better in Italy itself. So, we spent a week enjoying the many pizzas, pastas, and desserts to the fullest. Stresa is one of the most famous and charming towns on Lake Maggiore. The many hotels, parks, restaurants and mountain views make this the perfect retreat for many tourists from both home and abroad. Strolling along the lake and trying different restaurants, that was the goal for the week. And we can conclude that we achieved that goal!

Favorite restaurants

How is it possible that after a week of eating Italian food, you still can’t get enough? We certainly can’t, and with enough variety, you can eat deliciously all day long in Stresa. Here is a list of our favorite restaurants in this cozy town:
Hotel La Palma: compared to other restaurants, you pay a bit more for a plate of ravioli, but you will not find a more beautiful view than on the roof terrace of this hotel. Furthermore, the cocktails here are delicious!
K2: This woman turns every dessert into a true creation, it not only looks beautiful, but it also tastes like it. Two scoops of ice cream turn into a beautiful flower on a cone.
L’Angolo del Gelato: for €2.50 you get two scoops, of which you must have tried ‘Supa Inglese’.
Caffè Torino: the vegetarian pesto lasagna is a must-try! Piping hot, but the flavors are fantastic.
Antica Stresa: you can find this restaurant in a cozy square, where there is a lot to do. Besides the pizzas, the caprese salad is also excellent here.
Trattoria Stornello: when you see the dishes, you are afraid of the bill. These beautiful dishes are a feast for the eyes and the price is actually not too bad. And for a change, you will not find the traditional pasta bolognese here, but for example, zucchini spaghetti with tempeh sauce.
Mamma Mia: the friendly waiter is already waiting for you with a homemade drink. And you absolutely must not leave here without having tried the most fantastic tiramisu. Eat this dessert alone, it’s much too good to share!
Il Gigi Bar: enjoy the perfect cappuccino with small pastries. On Sunday mornings, the place is packed, so be on time and get a spot outside on the terrace.

Lake Maggiore

So, we left for Italy in early July with a fully loaded car. With the negative result of the antigen test (fortunately this test is free for all Zurich residents), self-tests and, at that time, one vaccine per person, we drove across the border. I would have liked to show the test result at the border, but without any checks, we drove right into Italy. In Italy itself, or especially in the smaller villages, such a large car is less convenient. The small winding roads test your driving skills, but fortunately Jeroen was able to cope well with them, ha ha. When we arrived in Stresa, we had a view of the enormous Lago Maggiore and were soon wandering through the small streets of this cute village.

Locarno, Lugano

From Switzerland, you drive in three hours to the border with Italy, this is only the case when the traffic at the Gotthard Tunnel is not too bad, in the worst case you are here for several hours waiting. I thought it would be nice to stop for a coffee in the south of Switzerland and because I was in the passenger seat I decided the route. That then Lugano and Locarno appear to be two entirely different places, which lead to an hour longer route. We took it for granted, we had vacation after all. I know, this is not the first time I made such a mistake.
