The French village of Colmar Tropicale in Malaysia

Even though there is plenty to do in Kuala Lumpur itself, it is also fun to discover cities around it. Malaysia is very big and is often skipped by tourists. The tourists and backpackers who visit the country, stay in Kuala Lumpur for a few days and then continue their journey. We, as tourists in our own country, now visit the places around the city. Let’s go to Colmar Tropicale in Bukit Tinggi!

Ten degrees cooler

After a few months in the warm, humid Kuala Lumpur it is wonderful to be able to go out to a somewhat cooler area. Luckily that is easy here, you are in no time at a place where it can sometimes be up to ten degrees cooler. Lovely and also something we need now and then. We have visited the Genting Highlands a few times now. Very nice, but also very busy!

Starbucks

Colmar Tropicale should be seen as a resort. When you walk through the gate, you’ll find the reception. We were lucky because here you can reserve a place in the van back to the center of Kuala Lumpur. There were three spots available so that was arranged. It soon became clear that we did not have to walk around here for more than half an hour. It is literally a street with a few (French) restaurants, a Starbucks (!) and a shop. The view is beautiful; with the French houses in the background you look out over the huge green landscape, but that’s it.

Japanese and botanical garden

A little damper! Because Colmar Tropicale (named after the French village of Colmar) looks like the nicest town you’ve ever walked around in. Until you get there and see that it is quite decayed. Even the server of the restaurant told us that there is nothing to do here. Now there seems to be a Japanese and botanical garden a bit further on. According to Wikipedia, there is a free shuttle bus. To be honest, after this disappointment we were glad that our shuttle bus went back to the warm, humid center of Kuala Lumpur. Nice try, but Bukit Tinggi and especially Colmar Tropicale can be skipped on your holiday to Malaysia.

French village

On the same level as Genting, you will find the town of Bukit Tinggi. After some research on the internet, it seemed to us that we can walk around here for an afternoon. Here you will find the French village of Colmar Tropicale and everywhere this is described as a cozy French village where you can take an Instagram worthy picture on every corner of the street….. Well, that promises something, doesn’t it? We just hadn’t thought about the fact that this village is very special, especially for Asian people.

Grab driver

From Kuala Lumpur, you drive in an hour with the Grab to the French village. Getting there is not such a problem, but how do you get back to the city? We asked our Grab driver if he could pick us up after about three hours. Unfortunately for us, he didn’t want to wait for that and we understand why. There is nothing to do around this village. You shouldn’t call it a village, more of a street with hotel rooms on both sides.
