The Long Term Social Visit Pass has been approved!

Visa or no visa, it remained a big surprise for a few months. Until last Wednesday Jeroen finally received the redeeming email. The application for my visa has been approved! ‘Glad to inform you that the Long Term Social Visit Pass for Lisa has been approved!’ That means I’m almost legally in this country.

Request

I think we’ve been applying for our visas for quite a few weeks now. First for Jeroen, because without a visa he wasn’t allowed to work here. Now such an application normally takes one to two months. We had a ‘bit’ of bad luck and because of moves at immigration Jeroen got his visa six months later. That uncertainty is not very pleasant, but once you have that visa you have forgotten about it for a long time.

Embassy

Only when Jeroen had accepted his visa and work permit the process for my visa could be started. After we went to the embassy for a letter (asking for my visa) Jeroen took on the further process. Within 15 working days we had to hear something from immigration.

Stamp

And we got that e-mail yesterday. My application has now been approved, but we’re not there yet. I have to get out of the country first. This means you have to leave Malaysia and when you return you will get a stamp in your passport again. Then I have to hand in my passport and a few days later I will receive my passport again with the social visit pass. Why does this have to be so complicated? Immigration says that you cannot be in this country before your visa application has been accepted.

Lake Toba

Now, this is perfect because 20 May is a national holiday in Malaysia. It is Wesak Day. Wesak Day or Vesakha Puja is an important Buddhist day of remembrance. The Buddhists commemorate the life and death of Gautama Buddha. Jeroen has a day off so we can leave that weekend. We looked for the cheapest ticket and it turned out to be to North Sumatra. Now there is not much to do in the capital Medan so we drive three hours inland to Lake Toba. This seems to be very nice so here we can go for a weekend! Next week a blog about Lake Toba and everything to do here.
