The Malaysian island of Penang. Why do you have to go here?
You are still dreaming about a holiday at the beach if you are disturbed by an annoying noise. The beach disappears when you find out that your alarm goes off! It’s six o’clock in the morning and you’d like to turn around for a while. Getting out of bed this early is usually no fun, especially if you are not on holiday but just have to work. Luckily this was not the case for us, because at eight o’clock the train left for Penang. On the program: a weekend on holiday in our own country.

The food capital of Malaysia
Georgetown has been on the UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008. In the city center, there is a whole walking route indicated where you can find the most beautiful street art. Although this is very popular, it is certainly not the only reason why people from all over Asia especially come to this city. Penang is seen as the food capital of Malaysia where you can enjoy the specialties of this country on the streets. Especially the Chinese Malaysians from Kuala Lumpur come en masse to Penang to enjoy the Chinese food.
Penang Hill
Besides the delicious food and Georgetown, you can easily enjoy a few days here. Penang Hill is a high group of hills where a steep train takes you to. The Chinese Kek Lok Si Temple is also worth a visit and if you’re looking for that beach vibe, then the boulevard on Gurney Drive should not be missed!

Six hours on the bus
You have several options to reach from Kuala Lumpur Penang. You can take the bus, train or plane. The bus is by far the cheapest option, but it also takes the longest. We once made the mistake to take the bus to Ipoh and were on the road for six hours. Penang is even further, so we didn’t like to spend a day in this vehicle again. Via the KTM website, you can easily book your train tickets. The train leaves from KL Sentral and stops at Kuala Lumpur Station, a small station next to Pasar Seni. Along the way you have a beautiful view to enjoy and about four hours later you get off at the final destination Butterworth. From there it’s, depending on the traffic, half an hour to Georgetown.
Langkawi and Redang
Even though Penang is an island, you don’t immediately get that typical island feeling. It feels more like a city on the waterfront. Penang is therefore not seen as the island where you have to be for the most beautiful beaches. Then you better make the crossing to Langkawi or the east, Redang. Of course, there are hotels on the beach where you can stay, but if you want to taste more the culture of this island, you have to go to Georgetown.
