TreeTop Walk in MacRitchie with monkeys
Jeroen and I have, now that we live here, the good intention that we will try more sports together. We don’t cycle here and we’re not a member of a tennis club, so we have to do something else. Last Saturday we made a hike through the MachRitchie park in Singapore.
Splashing view
Jeroen had already done this hike a few weeks ago. He then sent a picture of himself with a sweaty, exhausted head so I knew what to expect. It was a walk of about 7 kilometers with a lot of steep steps. Jeroen promised a spectacular view at a height of 25 meters… on a small bridge. In the MacRitchie Reservoir, you can choose from several hiking trails that vary from three to eleven kilometers. The nature reserve is 12 hectares in size, making it the largest in all of Singapore. We are not experienced hikers so we decided to take the middle road and go for a 7-kilometer hike, called the TreeTop Walk.

Forbidden
When you enter the park you will see large signs saying that it is forbidden to feed the monkeys. Another thing that is forbidden in this country! This joke will cost you $5000 if you do this and get caught. I was eager to spot every monkey there was, to prevent such a beast from coming near us. We had already experienced that someone got attacked 😉 by such a ‘cute’ creature.
Torn jumpsuit
The last time we went hiking was in the Cameron Highlands. Then I wore my new jumpsuit which was not the best idea. Fantastic memory. This time I was better prepared and we put on our sports clothes. That was necessary because it turned out to be a decent climb to the top for the ‘splashing’ view. When we arrived at the top, we walked to the bridge until we were stopped by an enormous monkey.

Brutal
I wanted to make a return, but Jeroen wouldn’t let that happen and wanted to cross the bridge. You have to imagine that when a fat monkey is on the bridge, you have to make an effort to walk past him. The bridge is not wide at all. The monkeys have been fed by tourists for years, so they are now very cheeky and even know that you have food hidden in your backpack. When the monkey disappeared we walked over the bridge (read: ran). I couldn’t enjoy it as much, but the view was still impressive. The 250 meter long bridge connects the two highest points of the MacRitchie Reservoir, Bukit Peirce and Bukit Kalang. You look out on the MacRitchie Reservoir and the huge jungle beneath you.
Muscle pain
The next few days I was reminded how sporty we had been. A lot of people have looked at me strangely how I tried to move around. The muscle pain was clearly present and Jeroen… no problems at all.
